The sessions include a range of retrieval, vocabulary, inference, explanation and deeper thinking activities. There are a wide range of activities in the slides (there are 21 slides in total) so I would recommend breaking into two or even three sessions. This fun and original collective worship session aims to assist children in understanding the value of endurance, through: Understanding what endurance is, and recognising why it is important; Understanding what the bible teaches us about endurance, and learning about how Jesus demonstrated endurance; Completing a fun challenge to demonstrate their own endurance; Learning strategies to demonstrate endurance in their own lives. This worship session is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people. For example, there are references to real-life examples of endurance in action (for example in the lives of J.K Rowling, Ed Sheeran and Lionel Messi) in order to help them to make the right choices in their own lives. The session also includes a reading and discussion centering on the endurance shown by Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The session also includes a fun interactive activity, a wonderful, thought-provoking video about the importance of endurance, and various discussion activities regarding how to show endurance in different areas of their own lives. No further resources are required, except for 3 potatoes and 3 straws for the endurance activity. The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included two pages of notes to assist the speaker. This engaging and interesting lesson enables students to develop the knowledge and skills needed to establish the content (e.g. the subject matter, poet’s key messages, and surface/ deeper meanings) of previously unseen poems. In particular, they define and understand each of the key features of content, practice identifying them in poems and analyse their effectiveness upon the reader. The lesson utilises a range of tasks, that require students to be both independent and collaborative learners. This highly engaging and informative double lesson (around 1.5 to 2 hours of teaching materials) helps build students’ ability at using varied and imaginative techniques to describe emotions in their creative writing. Specifically, students learn how to create in-depth paragraphs detailing the emotional state of their narrator and characters, both implicitly and explicitly. I wrote this lesson because I noticed that there are an extremely high volume of students that approach creative writing tasks (even in their GCSEs) offering little depth or detail in terms of their characters emotions. Even though they have clearly learnt a number of writing techniques from their teachers, their emotional writing often merely explicitly states how a character feels, using the same four or five emotions. In this lesson, students learn: - To define what emotions are; - To understand and use the vast range of emotional vocabulary and synonyms available in the English language; - To investigate different emotions, including how they can manifest themselves; - To understand how emotions can be communicated utilising a range of descriptive devices; - To create an imaginative and emotionally-driven piece of creative writing; - To self-assess their creative writing attempts; Included are all worksheets, and detailed and visual PowerPoint presentation, which explains each concept clearly, and a lesson plan for teacher guidance.
